An article titled Today’s Divorces Can Mean Cake and Eating It, Too discusses a new category in event planning – the Post-Divorce Party.
A Post-Divorce Party can creatively theme the end of a marriage with a party. Many celebrate the end of marriage much like a bachelor or bachelorette party with a trip to New Orleans, the beach, or a weekend full of events with friends.
A typical showpiece of the Post-Divorce Party is the “divorce cake”, which can range from an upside down “wedding” cake to decorative shapes of a wife pushing her husband off the top tier or even edible divorce decrees. Popular decorations include a man or woman being released back into the wild world of dating and games can include “giving” the bouquet back. Celebrity Chef Duff Goldman of Charm City Cakes in Baltimore says in planning a Post-Divorce Party he tries “to put a positive spin on what can be a difficult and stressful time for people”.
The Post-Divorce Party can also be a symbol to children that mom and dad still care about each other and more importantly, that they still care about the children. As quoted in the Observer, Steve Wolf marked the end of his marriage with a celebration for his three kids,”We wanted to do something that expressed the fact that we were doing the divorce not so much as an end of our relationship but as us moving into things like co-parenting and co-business management”.
